The Mariner

by Gilad Jaffe

There’s an out
in either direction.
I can eat a salmon
in a bowl
I built. Look,
it’s a slurry.
It’s a scream.
It takes a level
of skillful disassembly
to tell it cleanly
apart from
itself. Seas
part the seas
& the runner
looked safe
from this angle,
ripping into
harbor so
horizontally,
but the lump
of phlegm
from his throat
was too local
& not enough
to kill the
play. Relax
& relocate
your original
intention: double
in the gap.
There’s a break
in the glaze.
The fish gets
inside it.
