Nostos
by Gjertrud Schnackenberg
..
We harbor inner harbors,
…….Birds’ eye views
………..Of islands
….Eons after continents
…….Have broken up
And scattered over latitudes
…Of opening Aegeans—
………Losing sight—
…Like isolated fragments
Of papyrus, where a glimpse
……Of other Odysseys
……..Is measured out
….In ragged centimeters,
………..Partial, lost—
Yet island-edges, water-carved
….In intricate, eroding rock,
…….Still visibly recall
How ocean-distant coastlines
………..Even now
…Could fit, and interlock.
