Herbert Lomas

Herbert Lomas (1924-2011) was an English poet who published ten books, of which The Vale of Todmorden (Arc Publications, 2004) is the most recent. His Letters in the Dark (Oxford University Press, USA, 1986) was an Observer book of the year, and he received Guinness, Arvon, and Cholmondeley awards. He produced fourteen books of translation from Finnish and was a regular translator for the quarterly Books from Finland. His Contemporary Finnish Poetry (Bloodaxe Books, 1990) won the British Poetry Society’s 1991 biennial translation award. He was a member of the Finnish Academy and was made Knight First Class, Order of the White Rose of Finland, for his services to Finnish Literature. He taught at the universities of Helsinki and London.
